This is the tale of a deck that was technically built to code, but it was not built to endure. We are the only Master Deck Professional-CODE and certified by NADRA in evaluating and inspecting decks in Orange County. We take the code to mean the absolute minimum standard of a safe and sturdy pool deck. Any deck that is submitted to wear and tear from every day life (let alone the extremes of all four seasons that we see here in Orange County) needs to built with at least 15-25 years future proofing.
This pool deck in particular may have been built to code, but it didn’t fit our minimum standards. After a deck safety inspection and assessment, we drafted plans for a stronger, sturdier, safer, and simpler pool deck. (Get some design inspiration here!)
The goal for this reconstructed pool deck was to threefold:
Because this deck was directly attached to the above ground pool, it also was designed to fit (and surpass) the code required for pool safety. As with any deck that is built to stand the test of time, this one was constructed with a pressure treated frame. The homeowners opted for Azek decking – our preferred brand for style, performance, and warranty.
As you might imagine, pools can create a splash. That means making sure the deck can handle any amount of sitting water. Azek decking can withstand rot, weather, and bugs with very little cleaning and maintenance (read more about care for your deck here). All it takes is some seasonal sweeping!
Part of why we love building decks so much is because outdoor living spaces, generally speaking, are purely built for enjoyment. They’re a way for us to spend more time outdoors creating memories with loved ones. Rebuilding a pool deck is that much more fun, because who doesn’t love a good pool party?
